VINTAGE & VITICULTURE

While the season began with a wet cool spring, summer brought typical temperatures across Ontario. July was particularly warm and sunny with intense heat waves and high humidity. Early-ripening grape varieties escaped the wild weather of late fall and the unusual early cold snap in November. Harvest extended into early December, sometimes taking place in the snow.

WINEMAKER’S NOTES

Fermentation on the skins lasted 15 days then the must was pressed and malolactic fermentation was done in stainless steel tanks. This rare varietal is only grown in a handful of vineyards in Ontario and is also known as Trollinger x Riesling. It is a unique variety that is one of the first white grapes harvested. The key with this variety is to never over-ripen the fruit. The acids in this grape are delicate and will drop dramatically once the fruit is ripe harvest date is key. This vintage is a classic example of Kerner.

TASTING NOTES

Aromas of fresh floral honeysuckle, soft grassy notes, peach and pear fruit with a hint of lemon citrus. On the palate, the acidity reflects the freshness and at the same time balances with the slight sweetness of the wine. Kerner displays a firm structure with the finish of peach pit bitterness. Pair with white fish, baked or fried chicken, or vegetarian quiche. Also great with roast pork or Asian cuisine.
