2014 vintage started with a below norm temperatures from January to April. May came in with more normal temperatures and allowed the vines to settle in. Most of the summer was cooler and wetter which resulted in slow and steady maturation. August and September was back to normal temperatures and allowed the fruit to ripen. Harvest was as late as 10 days.
Wine was made using our oldest block of chardonnay planted in 1981. Wines from this block have always given us beautifully complex wines and 2014 is no exception. A slow warm fermentation in stainless steel was followed by aging 18 months in 80% new French oak and 20% in old American oak. The wine will continue to develop in bottle.
A complex layering of apple, pear, vanilla spice on the nose. Aromas are replicated on the palate with creamy rich notes of butter integrated with sweet oak on the finish. Will pair beautifully with any cream based dish. Try with smoked salmon or shellfish dipped in melted butter.
SCORE 89 "A rich full-bodied Niagara Chardonnay with aromas of golden apple and toasty oak."
Honestly great wines.
