Weather conditions were fairly normal in winter but early spring brought about very wet conditions and by early June the vineyards were behind by a couple of weeks. Summer came on strong with temperatures a few degrees above normal and dry sunny conditions allowed the fruit to ripen early.
Our fifth edition of the Magician is weightier that past vintages with of 92% Syrah and only 8% Pinot Noir in this blend. The grapes were hand harvested and 25 – 30% of the fruit from each variety was allowed to dry in our kilns for up to 4 weeks. The grapes were crushed and fermented on the skins for 12 days. After pressing the wine was moved into 1 year old French barriques, where the wine completed it alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged for 30 months in barriques and another 5 months in bottle.
Silky tannins and dark fruit on this full body wine create a long smooth finish. A balanced acidity interplays with black pepper, spice, black cherry, blackberry and chocolate notes. Good for grilled meats, roasts, especially lamb and hearty stews or pastas. Also a nice evening companion when paired with a sharp cheese or dark chocolate.
